PUPIL Frank Lampard got the better of Jose Mourinho to heap pressure on his old master last night – and it was well deserved.
Manchester United lost 8-7 on penalties after this cracking cup tie had seen Lampard’s Derby go a couple of minutes from victory in normal time.
After all the controversy surrounding Paul Pogba, United had needed an early goal to lift the mood and Juan Mata provided it.
It came in the third minute when he finished off the sort of flowing five-man move that United have failed to put together consistently.
Ashley Young sent Anthony Martial racing down the left, Romelu Lukaku flicked on his pass and Jesse Lingard helped it into the path of Mata who swept home a low left-foot shot for his first goal of the season.
Yet the Rams came close to a quick equaliser when United’s hesitant defence failed to deal with
Mason Mount’s cross and Mason Bennett looked certain to score at the far post only for Sergio Romero to make a superb block.
United wasted a number of chances to increase their lead.
Lukaku pounced on Richard Keogh’s poor control to race clear but Fikayo Tomori sprinted across to put off the United striker who sent his shot wide under pressure.
